Typescript manuscript containing information about the early settlement of Logan (Utah), 1845-1859. It tells of the arrival of J.C. Fremont in 1845, and early efforts to raise cattle in the valley. Also documented is the arrival of the Maughan party, which passed through the canyon from Brigham City, then known as Box Elder, into Cache Valley in 1856. Ricks discusses the foundation of Logan in 1859, and gives the names of many of its early residents.

Joel Edward Ricks was born October 18, 1889 at Rexburg, Fremont County, Idaho the son of Nathan and Sarah Ann Taylor Ricks. In 1908 Ricks enrolled at the University of Utah and graduated in 1912 with a BA in History. He then took a teaching position at South Sanpete High School at Gunnison, Utah where he taught and served as the school's principal until 1917.
